Description

Ozhibi'ige nini Peter Schuler is a band member of the Mississaugas of the Credit Reserve near Hagersville, Ontario. He is a Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather who likes to tinker around with craft making, occasional art making, occasional word aggregation, and is known by more than a few people as the guy who says, "My wife says I talk too much." Peter has stated goals of fighting racism and educating people in regard to Indigenous culture, as well as bringing culture and language back to Indigenous poeple, while he himself tries to learn and reclaim what government and church took away. He credits his wife Lois for guiding him and keeping him on track as they journey together on the path of reconciliation. Teachings, conversations and guidance from Teachers and Elders from the Sour Springs Longhouse, Three Fires Midewiwin Lodge and Minweyweygaan Lodge as well as random Elders he has met along the way have all contributed in some way to words that came from the tobacco that was offered with the simple request - "I ask for words to come to help the people and the rest of Creation to walk the Mino Bimadiziwin Miikina (The road of good life). "I don't really write anything. I take dictation. It comes from the tobacco and spirit. It's not something I can explain. I just have to accept that it works."

The Sound of the Homeland Drum is a collection of literary works spanning decades of creative and community outputs by Ozhibi’ige Nini Peter Schuler. Peter's work is driven by a strong sense of justice for Indigenous people and for our non-human relatives. While not shying away from complex emotions like grief, loss, rage, and anger, on the contrary, his work teaches us we need to find the ways to feel these emotions while simultaneously not feeding them, hiding them or looking away from them. This collection of work by Peter was launched at the ArtsEverywhere Festival in Guelph in May of 2026 through the Indigenous Otherwise Program, and printed by PS Guelph, both supported by the Musagetes Foundation.
