Written by Dawn Quigley, an enrolled citizen of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe. Illustrated by Chief Lady Bird, a visual artist from Mnjikaning Rama First Nation. Nancy King (Potawatomi/Chippewa) has paternal roots in Moosedeer Point First Nation in Ontario. King signs all her artwork with her Anishinaabe name Ogimaakwebnes, which means Chief Lady Bird in the Ojibway language.
Go ahead, think of a tall tale. Remember Paul Bunyan, that giant fella who roamed over the “empty” lands, felling trees, and digging the Grand Canyon? Well, the problem is some of these details are pretty galling to the millions of folks living on those empty lands! So here comes Dawn Quigley, who once made a New Yorker laugh so hard that the George Washington bridge fell into the Hudson. And let me introduce you to Chief Lady Bird, an artist who painted a picture with colors so beautiful that the sky borrowed them for that thing we call sunrise. Well, maybe not, but their ancestors were here long before so called settlers and their storytelling kin. And they’ve got some dang funny tales of their own to set the record straight, and make you laugh while they’re at it! Audience: Ages 4-8.
