Description

Nicole Kelley is a Cree/Métis hoop dancer and author with a connection to Saulteaux First Nation through her mother-in-law. She holds a Bachelor of Education, a Master of Education in Curriculum Studies, and is currently pursuing a Master of Counselling Psychology. She taught at elementary schools for several years and is a passionate advocate for Indigenous students. She wrote Mabel’s Feather to encourage conversations about the ongoing issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People with students of all ages in the spirit of reconciliation. Born in Alberta, Jillian Dolan was raised in Europe, which is a long way to go to grow up. She is a member of the Métis Nation of Alberta with family roots in Kapawe'no First Nation.

Mabel always brings her special feather with her, no matter where she goes. Mabel’s red feather is a comfort in her mother’s absence. It tickles her nose and makes her feel safe, just like her mom did.

One day, when Mabel is on a walk with Kookoom and their family dog, a gust of wind steals the feather from her pocket. Mabel and Kookoom go looking for the missing feather at a local festival— and find that, sometimes, healing can be found closest to home.

In the spirit of reconciliation, Mabel’s Feather encourages meaningful conversations and raises awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People.

A glossary of Saulteaux words and pronunciations is included at the back of the book. Audience: Ages 4-7.
