Miali Coley-Sudlovenick is an Inuk-Jamaican, born and raised in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Miali's first play Blackberries was produced and aired on CBC Gem in 2021. Miali is the owner of Allurvik, a consulting business focused on teaching Inuktitut, Inuit culture, and education. Since completing her bachelor of education in 2013, Miali has taught elementary students and adult learners in person and online. In 2018, Miali created the first Inuktitut podcast, called Tusaavisii?. Being Different is Miali's first book. Illustrated by Alex Aldrich Barrett.
In this bilingual Inuktitut/English book, Ilataaq just moved to a new community in the North with her parents and pup. Ilataaq has curly hair, brown skin, and big, beautiful eyes. At her new school, the kids have some questions about the things that make her look different. When Ilataaq talks about the kids' questions with her mother, she learns about how special her differences are.
Being Different encourages young readers to embrace what makes them unique. Ilataaq and her mother show the importance of being proud of where you come from, and of all the parts that make you you. Audience: Ages 6-8.
