Description
100 Days of Cree is a unique introduction to the Plains Cree language as well as worldview written by James Smith Cree Nation Associate Professor of Education at Trent University Neal McLeod. The author approached the topic of learning Cree language through a series of Facebook posts. Working with Cree linguists Arok Wolvengrey and the late Freda Ahenakew, Neal McLeod has developed a must-read 325-page book that presents everyday topics such as Treaty, Place Names, Clothing, Water, Sky, Dances, Medicines, Star Wars, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Tim Hortons, Johnny Cash Songs, Bannock, Bedtime for the Bingo Caller, Computer Terminology, and more in two to five pages of vocabulary and short stories or anecdotes about the theme. Often drawing on personal experiences the author provides a new approach to understanding a First Nation language and worldview. A Guide to Cree Pronunciation by Arok Wolvengrey is included in this important addition to learning an Indigenous learning. Highly recommended. 100 Days of Cree has been selected in the Young Adult/Adult Category Longlist for First Nation Communities READ 2017.
