Description

Arctic Thunder is an action-filled young adult sports novel with a twist. The storyline revolves around a fourteen-year-old teen whose father moves his small town family to Inuvik where he is stationed as an RCMP officer. Matt is completely attached to his championship box lacrosse team in Alberta. The move proves extremely difficult for the boy as he struggles to make new friends, leave current friends behind, and stop playing lacrosse, the sport he loves. The move means immediate culture shock but Matt manages to make new friends and his family is introduced to the athletic spectacle of Arctic Winter Games. The athleticism of the competitors gives Matt's father the idea to develop a local lacrosse team based out of the school. The story moves on from that point as the team members practice and learn the fundamentals of lacrosse. Interspersed with the sports theme are these around bullying, friendships, identity, Elders, importance of living a healthy lifestyle, boy-girl relationships, and Inuvialuit and Gwich'in cultures. A fast-paced story about a team sport for male and female readers. Recommended. Reading Level: 5.8. Teacher's Guide: http://www.dundurn.com/sites/default/files/ArcticThunderTRG.pdf.
