Description
In the Presence of Each Other: A Pedagogy of Storytelling is a recent education title published by the University of Toronto press and written by storyteller and Professor Johanna Kuyvenhoven. Her work with oral storytelling in the classroom is documented in this book that is based on her unpublished doctoral dissertation from the University of British Columbia. Her study of a grade 4 and 5 classroom explores the way oral stories were presented in this classroom by a teacher and how the experiences provided opportunities for students increasing their vocabularies, writing skills, problem-solving abilities and empathetic responses. Storytelling provided ways for the teacher to illustrate information, explain abstract concepts and connect ideas to applications. The author found that oral stories enhanced students' overall learning in terms of language and communication skills.
