Maurice Switzer is a citizen of the Mississaugas of Alderville First Nation in southern Ontario where his grandfather served as Chief in the first decade of the 20th Century.

At various times he has served as Publisher of the Winnipeg Free Press, Communications Director for the Assembly of First Nations and Anishinabek Nation, appointee to the Ontario Human Rights Commission, and adjunct professor of Indigenous Studies and Communications at Laurentian University.
