Description
Minegoo Mniku: The Mi'kmaq Creation Story of Prince Edward Island Epekewitkewey A'tukwaqn is a 32-page picture book retold for primary level learners by author and illustrator Sandra L. Dodge for Acorn Press Canada. Using watercolours and accompanying text the storyteller artist simplifies the account about the Creation story of the Mi'kmaq. Included in the account are the creation of the world, as well as the people and the special land now known as Prince Edward Island. Every time the Creator turns his attention toward the land he brings something new into being by the storyteller's repetition of the phrase, The Great Spirit Does a Thing. With the assistance of Kluskap, the Eagle and Whale the people known as the Mi'kmaq find a home on a piece of beautiful land known as Minegoo. The Great Spirit gives special gifts to the people that include the wigwam, canoe and snowshoes. This dual language picture is written in Mi'kmaq and English. Georgina Francis, Aboriginal education consultant for Abegweit First Nation provides the Mi'kmaq language text, Recommended.
