Danny Blackgoat, Navajo Prisoner is one of the titles in 7th Generations' PathFinders Series. Sixteen-year-old Danny lives with his extended family in a Navajo community in Canyon de Chelly, when the United States military burns Navajo hogans, kills their sheep herds, and forces the survivors to walk to a distant military fort. After being labelled a troublemaker during the Long Walk, Danny endures verbal and physical abuse and even murder attempts after he is sent to a Texas labour camp for Confederate Army prisoners of war. Here Danny faces a mean-spirited and violent prisoner who not only bullies the youth with a rattlesnake in his sleeping cot but plots to kill Danny. Danny is the only Navajo prisoner until he meets Jim Davis who acts as a father figure and advises and protects Danny. The man even plans a daring escape for Danny that challenges and pushes Danny's traditional Navajo values to the limit. The story ends with Danny riding off toward his home in Canyon de Chelly wondering if there will be any family or friends to come home to. As he gives his traditional thanks with corn pollen and a prayer he knows the future is uncertain. This powerful historical fiction account of the Navajo Long Walk is a unique take on this shameful event in American history but the story celebrates the strength and courage of one Navajo youth.
