Chippewa Customs remains the classic anthropological study of Ojibwe culture including men's and women's roles, food, clothing, food, games, the arts, life cycle, seasonal round of activities, ceremonies, legends, music, housing, clans, transportation, and hunting, fishing, and gathering. Originally published in 1929 as bulletin 86 of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of American Ethnology, this edition is a publication of the Minnesota Historical Society. Topics covered include homes, clothing, food, health measures, life cycle, dreams, midewiwin, stories and legends, music, dances, games, seasonal cycle, transportation, weaving, tanning, picture writing, design, and beadwork. The author's research informants are identified in the text and resided in White Earth, Red Lake, Cass Lake, Leech Lake, Mille Lac, Minnesota communities, and Lac Court Oreilles in Wisconsin. She also interviewed Chippewa community members from Manitou Rapids in Ontario. The volume contains numerous archival photographs, maps, glossary of Chippewa terms, and an index.
