Description
Bear for Breakfast, Makwa kidji kijebà wìsiniyàn, Algonquin and English, is the recent Robert Munsch picture book about a young boy who wants to have a unique breakfast. Instead of having a bowl of cereal or some delicious pancakes Donovan tells his mother he wants to eat bear for breakfast. Donovan’s grandfather explained that as a child he often ate bear for his breakfast. Mother explains that she had just shopped for groceries but if Donovan hurried he might find some bear meat for his morning meal. Donovan immediately sets out to locate bear. He meets locates several animals but there are no bears. Suddenly Donovan locates a bear and the tables are turned as the bear begins to stalk Donovan. Donovan safely makes it home where grandfather meets the bear and hits the bear on the head with a frying pan. The family decides they will not have bear for breakfast. This silly story is told in dual language text featuring Algonquin and English. Language translation is provided by Joan Commanda Tenasco. This story was inspired by a young boy named Donovan a first-grader in in La Loche, Saskatchewan, a Chippewan community in northern Saskatchewan that Robert Munsch visited in January, 1990.
