The Incredible Adventure of Mary Jane Mosquito: A Musical Cabaret is a one woman musical in one-act by renowned Cree playwright, performer, musician and poet Tomson Highway. This remarkable 70-page book is a treat for the eyes as well as an uplifting and positive story about a girl mosquito born without wings. Her disability is overwhelming but this young mosquito has a dream and she perseveres and lives to fulfill her dream to become a singer and entertainer beloved by audiences. Attending a special school remarkably similar to residential school the tiny mosquito brings a message of hope for kids who feel they are outsiders or victims of bullying. The illustrations by Sue Todd are vivid, colourful and imaginative linocuts that bring a smile to readers' faces. The entire script told mainly in English contains French and Cree words and phrases recounts Mary Jane's life and success. This amazing book is a brilliant read aloud book for young students and would make a viable one-act play for secondary level students looking for a unique Canadian musical play bringing humour and a positive message to students. Highly recommended.
