Description
My Arctic 1, 2, 3 is a children's picture book by well-known Inuit author Michael Kusugak. In this counting book for young readers the author incorporates the distinctive animals from the Arctic in a storytelling format. The book begins with the numbers from one to ten then jumps to twenty, then 100, then 1,000,000, and finally returns to one. Each illustrated page has a full-colour drawing of an Arctic animal that the author has watched as a child. The text is written in English and syllabics. The introduction offers the author's reflection of his childhood, and how the family was knowledgeable about the various animals they hunted for food and clothing. At the end of the book there is a glossary of new terms including terms such as tundra and inuksugak. Four pages of stories with black and white illustrations about various animals such as the polar bear, seal, fox, whale and caribou are included. This is a delightful children's book that offers an Inuit perspective of the Arctic environment. The illustrations by Vladyana Krykorka capture the essence of Michael Kusugak's storytelling. A hardcover edition is also available.
